Beginning September 23, 2025, Kerman Parks and Recreation will be offering Beginner and Intermediate Chess classes for ages 6 & up! Each class is 6-weeks, taught by instructor Nicholas Lenhart. The beginner class is designed to teach the fundamentals of chess including game rules and strategies, names and values of game pieces, and basic gameplay. The Intermediate chess class is intended for chess players with some experience to improve gameplay and strategy, practice using puzzles, and learn endgames. Both classes cost $35.00 and are held once a week at the Kerman Senior Center, 720 S 8th Street. Classes end with the Kerman Chess Tournament on November 1, 2025. Chess equipment is provided, and all class participants receive free entry into the tournament. Non-participants can also enter the Kerman Chess Tournament on November 1, 2025 for $15.00. Players are also encouraged to visit Open Chess on Fridays from 4:00-6:00pm to practice their newly learned skills with a variety of players.
